Installing the Roof Fan

I bought a Maxxair Roof Fan off Amazon. I knew I had to cut a hole in the top of the van and this was one of the scariest things I have ever done. What if I cut it wrong? What if I cut myself? So many things were going through my mind at the time so I chickened out and had one of the guys from work help me. He was mostly guiding me through it but I was scared!

First I drew out the 12x12 dimensions on the interior of the insulation and then I drilled up through the top of the roof the 4 corners of the square. I then got on top of the van and used a saw to cut through the metal. Note to self... make sure you have protective gear and long sleeves on because when cutting metal the bits fly everywhere and they burn. This part terrified me not only because I am literally cutting a hole in the top of the van but because I and getting hit with hot metal. Once the hole was cut at the top I then moved to the interior and used a box cutter to remove the insulation.

After this was completed the rest of the installation was very simple. I simply dropped the fan into the hole, screwed it down, and used self-leveling sealant over all of the screws and around the fan. As far as the electrical part of it, I used an old cigarette lighter plug and powered it with the portable power bank.

Overall, the entire install was extremely easy and if I would have know what I was doing it would have been much faster.

In fact, if you read through any of my blog posts know that every single one of the tasks took much much longer than it should have because I have no idea what I am doing. So each project consists of... first the idea, deciding how I am going to do it, then researching everything and usually getting off task, then actually starting the project, deciding that's not the right way or I didn't like the way it turned out, and doing the project over.
